Boswroth Tools Newsletter 3
May 8, 2008
Spring is finally Here! We're getting ready for Summer! In our previous two eNewsletters we provided the materials list and beginning instructions to build a sofa table. Now is the time to complete the project and provide your home or a special friend's home with a quality, hand-crafted piece of furniture that will last a lifetime. We have included the final steps to completing your sofa table. By now you may have found you are needing to add pieces to your Log Furniture " Tool Box". Maybe additional size tenon cutters or forstner bits. Now is the time to add these pieces and take advantage of our Spring Clearance Sale! We hope you a wonderful Spring Season! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sofa Table Project From Newsletter 1 & 2: Completion The Bottom 1. Set out the table sides 2. On logs B, make a mortise mark at center, between logs 3. Using a drill with a 2" forstner bit, drill a hole 1.5 inches deep at each ark 4. Set out logs C (center brace) 5. Using a drill with a tenon cutter, cut a tenon 1.5" long at each end of logs C 6. Do a dry fit by place logs C into logs B to check that all the joints fit properly 7. Apply glue inside the mortises on logs B and insert logs C 8. Check to see that the log frame is standing level, square and straight 9. Allow to dry for 24 – 36 hours Pine Board Top You can buy the pine board top "ready made" at a lumber yard or specialty shop, or you can build it for yourself. For information on how to build it yourself, try the local library or bookstore for detailed instructions enjoining boards. 1. Once you have the pine board top, cut it to size (18" x 60") 2. Round the top edges with a router or sandpaper 3. Sand top and tides until completely smooth 4. Position the top on the log frame, leaving a 2" over-hang at front and back and a 6” over-hang at each end 5. Drill a 1/2" x 5" deep hole through the table top and into the log A leg 6. Coat the 1/2" pegs with glue and pound into place 7. Saw off the ends of the 1/2" pegs flush with the table top and sand smooth 8. Allow the sofa table to dry for 24 hours 9. Coat with clear polyurethane --------------------------------------------------------------- Recycling Ideas for your Wood Chips & Shavings 1. Horse owners use shavings for their stalls. They make nice small animal beds for chickens, hamsters etc. Especially good for pet owners allergic to straw. 2. The sawdust is great for soaking up chemical spills such as oil, the shavings are good for starting fires and bbq’s, and you could compost some of it. 3. Try to pull a shaving apart using your hands, they are very strong. They can be used in cement and also lime morter for the walls, you can find all this on eco house building. 4. Shavings would have the same use as composted bark, mulch, paths etc - but anything painted or treated would be inappropriate for that. Use fresh green hardwood shavings for paths - they bed in nicely after looking a bit pale initially. ------------------------------------------------------------ --
